Festival Plaza Mall (IKEA)

Sewage Treatment Plant for Cooling Tower Reuse

Located adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Road, Festival Plaza Dubai, an urban lifestyle mall owned and operated by Al Futtaim Group, is spread over an area of 648,000 sq.ft. The mall launched in 2019 during which year Clear Water Solutions was approached by Al Futtaim Group to carry out a Sewage Treatment Plant project for it.

THE CHALLENGE

Minimizing their fresh water consumption

Festival Plaza had been envisaged as a sustainable project and much thought had gone into making sure that it met as many of the LEED points as possible. Using water cooled chillers for air conditioning made the project energy efficient, but this required a significant amount of water. The proposed solution was to use an Advanced SBR type wastewater treatment system that would maximize the recovery of their own wastewater while minimizing the environmental impact of a Sewage Treatment Plant in a populated area.

OUR APPROACH

Recover and treat all the watewater

An Advanced Sequential Batch Reactor (ASBR) system was designed into the building to recover all of the facility’s wastewater, including kitchens, toilets and condensate, to produce a high quality Treated Sewage Effluent for Cooling Tower Reuse. This system allows the user to recover 99% of their sewage and minimize their fresh water consumption.

THE RESULT

Economical and High Recovery

By being smart about the source of the influent, we are able to recover this water without requiring any membrane treatment, making the plant economical and allowing a very high recovery.

Design Flow: 260 m3/day

Influent: 422 mg/l BOD5, 1000 mg/l COD

Effluent: < 10 mg/l BOD5, 150 mg/l COD

Quality Equipment Rentals

Vehicle and Equipment Wash-Water Treatment for Reuse

Centrally located on Sheikh Zayed Road, the Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel is an iconic part of the Dubai skyline and is directly connected to the Mall of the Emirates, one of the biggest and most famous malls in the country. With its increasing success, the Sheraton chairpersons at Majid al Futtaim Properties Group had approached Clear Water Solutions in 2013 to reduce their water wastage and biological fouling.

THE CHALLENGE

Reducing the biological fouling

One of the property’s largest operating expenses was the fresh water required for their central air conditioning system’s cooling towers. The management had challenged the Engineering team to find an effective solution. Their team realized that using conventional physical and chemical treatment of grey water would likely result in residual biological substances that would damage their very expensive AC equipment. We proposed biological treatment using Advanced SBR which would practically eliminate any remaining biological substances in the water, offering near-portable quality water at the outlet.

OUR APPROACH

On-Demand Supply

An Advanced SBR system was retrofitted inside an existing water storage tank in the basement of the building. The drains were diverted using electrically actuated butterfly valves to feed the plant “On-Demand.” With the flip of a switch, the plant has the flexibility to accept some amounts of Sewage during high demand periods.

THE RESULT

First of its Kind Solution

The plant was commissioned as a first-of-its-kind for using biological treatment to reduce the biological fouling and achieve an exceptional quality treated effluent, to be reused easily in the cooling towers.

Design Flow: 70 m3/day

Influent: < 100 mg/l BOD5, < 200 mg/l COD

Effluent: < 5 mg/l BOD5, < 50 mg/l COD

“Clear Water provided our property, the Sheraton Mall of the Emirates, Dubai, with a water treatment system for our cooling towers. Their system has performed very well and they have proven themselves to be a competent and reliable business partner. In a field where problems and excuses are common, the Clear Water team has stood out because they get the job done.”

Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort and Spa

Sewage Treatment Plant (MBBR) for On-site Reuse in Irrigation

Hilton Ras Al Khaima Resort & Spa is a luxurious hotel from the international Hilton chain. The multi-award winning resort lays across 1.5 kilometers of sandy beaches and numerous grassy grounds. As a client of Clear Water Solutions, the hotel wished to replace their old STP with a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor to treat their sewage for irrigation reuse, which was achieved using our state of the art MBBR technology.

THE CHALLENGE

Replace and enhance the old plant while the facility is in operation

The Hilton RAK Hotel and Spa was near full-occupancy throughout the scheduled construction of the plant. As such, a temporary solution would be required to allow the facility to continue to operate without spending huge amounts on sewage disposal and on irrigation water. We provided a temporary solution using their existing infrastructure, and then built an entirely new plant on the same premises. The MBBR system required small enough tanks to make this possible.

OUR APPROACH

Full recovery for on-site reuse

We installed a 2-stage MBBR to handle 100% of the facility’s sewerage for on-site reuse. The system features a simple coarse screen, cutter pumps to feed the system, a parabolic wedge-wire influent screen, an energy efficient fine bubble membrane aeration system, a sludge digester to minimize sludge disposal, and simple filtration to make the water safe for irrigation reuse.

THE RESULT

Nutrient rich irrigation

More than the benefits of saving the cost of waste removal, the hotel has the added advantage of conserving water and the ecological advantage of using nutrient rich water to irrigate the manicured landscaping of this 5-star hotel.

Design Flow: 405 m3/day

Influent: 300 mg/l BOD5, 600 mg/l COD

Effluent: < 10 mg/l BOD5, 100 mg/l COD
